A Year in Pictures

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

I started out with the idea to go back through the year’s worth of photos and pick out several that best summarized 2009. I mean, we’re all reflecting on what was, so why not illustrate? It proved not so simple. First of all, how do you select just one or two from here or there? Can just one photo encapsulate or convey all that a certain memory holds?

Then there are the memories that went unphotographed. Some of those are the best. The spontaneous ones, the ones you didn’t see coming. Like having to race through the streets of London and then sprint up the towering escalators of Heathrow to narrowly avoid missing your connecting flight to Africa. Or going skinny dipping for the first time one summer night. Or having your best friend surprise you by flying home for the holidays on Christmas Eve.

I was reading from Hebrews the other night and my eyes fell upon this line: “What is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.” Some things are hard to let go of. But at least there are photos to reminisce upon…and the anticipation for what may lie ahead. And for those memories that are picture-less, well, that’s partially what this blog is for :)

Here’s a glimpse of what my 2009 looked like:
